Participate

The WELCOME program is a one-semester learning community program aimed at providing comprehensive support to first-year students during their transition into college. The research aims to assess the impact of the WELCOME Program on students during their college careers.. Click here to learn more about the program!

Students selected for WELCOME will be placed into cohorts of twenty-five, i.e. their learning community. Together, each cohort will navigate three courses during their first semester:

• Bridges to Success (a first-year experience course) (FIQWS 10015/SCC 10100)
• Freshman Inquiry Writing Seminar (FIQWS 10115)
• Either PSY 10200: Intro to Psychology, ECO 10250: Intro to Microeconomics, OR INTL 10100: Intro to International and Global Studies

In addition, WELCOME students will benefit from individualized advising, peer mentorship, and financial support for one semester.

2. Meet with WELCOME advisor to confirm eligibility and enroll
3. Enroll in WELCOME courses*
4. Get your $90 OMNY card!

*Selection for the program will be at random, and students who are not selected, will still have the opportunity to meet with advisors and enroll in the course titles available through WELCOME. Students with AP or college-level credits in English, Psychology, Economics, or International & Global Studies are not be eligible for the program. All students who sign up receive a $90 OMNY card, regardless of selection.

• Students of ALL MAJORS are eligible to participate.
• You must be in their first or second semester of college (regardless of credits) with an interest in Psychology or Economics
• Are not in SEEK or Honors
• Are not a transfer student
• Are eligible to enroll in one of the WELCOME cohorts (based on their current courses and transfer credits)
• Have not enrolled in WELCOME during a previous semester
• Students who have AP or college-level course credits in English, Psychology, Economics, or International & Global Studies may not be eligible.
• Students will be required to sign a consent form.

Students will be selected for the WELCOME program through a randomization process. Students will be randomly assigned to either:

• • • (1) a learning community model (WELCOME)
    • (2) a typical freshman experience.

Participants in both groups will be asked to participate in a survey one year after their first semester. Students who are not selected will still have the opportunity to meet with advisors and enroll in the course titles available through WELCOME. All students, regardless of selection, will receive a $90 OMNY card.

All students who enroll in the WELCOME Program will receive a complimentary, one-time* $90 OMNY card. Students will be able to collect their OMNY card on campus in the Colin Powell School Advising Office after the start of the semester. 

*Lost OMNY cards cannot be replaced.
